The 2011 Edition
In the Gentlemen’s competition we’ll pretty much see the same scenario as in Roland Garros 2011. Rafa Nadal will try to defend both title and #1 ATP spot but this time the Spaniard is not playing on his favourite surface. Djokovic will try to reach the final for the first time in his career (he was a semifinalist in 2007 and 2010) but he will most likely face Federer again in the semifinals. So far, Nadal seems to be the big favourite but Federer and Djokovic are also close to the title this year, especially the Serbian, who never won Wimbledon. Andy Roddick is again fit to play after the injury that sidelined him in Paris. The Czech Tomas Berdych has lots of points to defend, being last year’s runner up.
In the Ladies competition, Serena and Venus Williams are back into action, however they are seeded #7 and #23, but this was never a problem for the American players. World no 2, Kim Clijsters, is out due to an injury she picked up at s-Hertogenbosch. Caroline Wozniacki, the leader of the WTA rankings, never went past fourth round and it is not a favourite for winning the title. Judging by the recent form and past results, we can safely say that Maria Sharapova has pretty big chances to win the trophy this year. But with the Williams sisters thrown in the mix and with Na Li’s exceptional form, it will be a tight tournament.

The four Grand Slam tournaments, also called the Majors,  are the most important tennis events of the year in terms of world ranking points, tradition, prize-money awarded, and public attention. They are the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

A singles player or doubles team that wins all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year is said to have achieved the "Grand Slam". If the player or team wins all four consecutively, but not in the same calendar year, it is called a "Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam". Winning all four at some point in a career, even if not consecutively, is referred to as a "Career Grand Slam". Winning the four Majors and a gold medal in tennis at the Summer Olympics has been called a "Golden Slam" since 1988,[citation needed] when Steffi Graf became the only person to accomplish that feat in a single calendar year. Andre Agassi is the only other player to achieve a "Golden Slam". But Agassi did not do it in one calendar year, so his is called a "Career Golden Slam".

Venus Williams will play on Day 3 at the All England Club in a match that may provide a challenge.  Williams has drawn a young player who has recently made a little bit of a name for herself in Ekaterina Makarova.
Makarova turned 22 earlier this month and she picked up her first tour title in Eastbourne this past weekend.  While that may not impress many enough to back her to beat Venus Williams the argument could be made that that is the right play to make.

Firstly Makarova is coming in long at +550 (11/2) with Victor Chandler.  Secondly, Williams is no better than -550 (2/11), odds that can be found with Boylesports.  Pounding a 30 year old in women's tennis is a really risky play against a 22 year recent titlist.

Thirdly, Makarova's form in Eastbourne was nowhere near ordinary.  She was ranked 100th pre-tournament and she had to go through qualifying to make the main draw.  By the time she had won the $600,000 tournament she had won 8 consecutive grass court matches ALL OF WHICH WERE IN STRAIGHT SETS AND THE FIELD INCLUDED TONS OF TOP PLAYERS.

Makarova beat Victoria Azarenka, Samantha Stosur, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova, and Flavia Pennetta on the way to the title.  Kim Clijsters was also in the tournament although neither of the Williams sisters were.

Venus has drawn a test here in the second round and it is a bit of an unlucky draw.  There is no way Makarova can be considered +550 (11/2) in this match and the true odds probably are closer to this:

Venus -200 vs Makarova +200.
Williams will probably still win 7-5, 7-5 but if the match can be expected to be close and therefore hinging on few important games, then a +550 underdog is good to go as she may only need a few lucky bounces.
